Manuela Carmena, Johnny Araya and Rita Maestre to deliver 2nd UCCI Graphic Novel Award on 6 November

Madrid, 23 October 2018. On 6 November at 11am, the Sala Taller at Matadero Madrid (Paseo de la Chopera, 14, 28045) is playing host to the 2nd Graphic Novel Award ceremony, organised by the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI), the City of Madrid and Sexto Piso Editorial.

The award will be given by Manuela Carmena, Mayor of Madrid and co-chair at UCCI; Johnny Araya, Mayor of San José de Costa Rica and also co-chair at UCCI; and Rita Maestre, spokesperson for the City of Madrid and Secretary-General at UCCI. The ceremony will be part of the 2nd World Forum on Urban Violence.

Candidates for the 2nd UCCI Graphic Novel Award came from nine different countries. Top of the list in terms of the number of entries were Argentina and Mexico, followed by Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, Brazil and – for the first time – Costa Rica. Interestingly enough, one of the authors in a multiple author novel was from Singapore.

The jury is made up of members from different organisations and regions in Ibero-America, in an effort to ensure professional, cultural and language diversity. They announced their decision on 10 September.

The UCCI Graphic Novel Award, supported by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the International Youth Agency for Ibero-America (OIJ), is aimed at encouraging artistic creativity across the region as related to the values and principles underlying the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals
